A goth is a person who has some of these qualities, but isn't limeted to;

#1. Paints nails black, dyes hair black, and wears all black to fit in with the goth group or to be cool.

#2. Cuts wrists or any other part of body a.k.a. self mutalation.

#3. finds inperfections in their lives and then creates melodramas around each one.

#4. basically, "acts differently" to fit in.

...both are kinda hypocritical if you ask me...the main goal is be an individual, correct? but purposely avoiding mainstream is just as bad or worse than being mainstream. the point of individuality, to me, is the ability to do what you want, wear what you want, REGARDLESS of who thinks it's cool or not, not becuase most people think it's uncool or wierd or different..if you like black and nobody wears black, wear black. if you like pink and everybody wear pink, wear pink. true freedom is being able to choose to be a conformist. ^_^
