That's the only way in which it is synonymous.

Frosty, picture me saying something like, "Come here so I can admire the beauty of your depthless eyes," while actually meaning something like, "I need to check your eye color." The spoken sentence is a melodramatic satire of the implied sentence. In the same way, the written sentence "Go to General Discussion so I can assess your value as a poster" is a melodramatic satire of the implied sentence "Go to General Discussion so we can get to know you."
