That's really cool. I'm not so sure about your claim that it's closer to Latin than any other language, though. It's possible, since French, Spanish, and Italian are all heavily influenced by Germanic languages, but it seems to me from those translations that Romanian might be influenced towards various Slavic languages, thus making it just as distant from Latin as the other Romanic languages. Could you maybe explain what makes Romanian closer to Latin than the other Romanic languages in your experience?

Well I know little arguments but I do know for a fact that Romanian is the closest in terms of grammar, while other latin based languages are closer vulgar latin, although I've been able to find a few articles stating this fact in english, I only found a forum topic which attempts to explain:

Isn't Slavic a fairly general term?

I thought that would include Czecks, Poles, Romanian, Bohemian, Slovaks, Slovenian and a couple others.. all the way to Russian if I remember correctly.

I would expect to find some similarities in all these languages.

My last name is of Slavic origin. And I'm not exactly white skinned. :)

I suppose grammatically speaking you're right. It just struck me that since the actual etymologies and orthographies, and the general morphology as a whole, seemed so radically different, that the claim seemed misinformed. I guess you're right syntactically, though; although whether syntax or morphology is more important in determining language approximation is, of course, debatable.

In short I think Romanian is set apart from other Latin languages because my ancestors didn't change their language during the roman occupation which only lasted for 100 years and most colonists were roman legionaries who barely spoke Latin themselves, not to mention a portion of the country 14% by some, 75% by others, was never conquered yet in all Romania, and the now separate Republic of Moldavia, Romanian is spoken the same way with just a slight variation of accent and a few different words.

Add to this the fact that in Italy there are several very different dialects (not just accents) of Italian, and the fact that no one knows anything about the language that was spoken in Dacia (ancient Romania) before the roman occupation and you have yourself a historical and linguistic mystery

If you do study languages I'd really like your opinion of how Romanian was formed, or what you, as an outsider, think of the ancient Dacian language, is it just dead without a single trace left, or did it never really change and was in fact, an older form of Latin.

@GC - Probably more so when we got out of school than right now, since I haven't talked with my French teacher since I got out of school. I'm basically the best in my class; but I wouldn't consider myself fully bilingual, no.

... I have to admit; my focus in linguistics has mostly been on dead or otherwise classical languages. I really have only the faintest notions of the natures of Slavic languages. (Though I did once memorize and sing along to this song by the Russian singer named Vitas (lyrics).)

Slovenia, Europe. If someone doesn't give two shits about it, our language and Russian sound practically the same to them. It's like our word + incorporated Russian "ja/nja". ('Cept that it's not really so easy)

I'm glad you knew that it's a country and not something you can buy in a store and eat. Also, if you know that Slovenia and Slovakia are two different countries and can tall apart our flag from the Russian, then you're pretty wickedy cool.

Well, sadly I do not know the Slovenian flag, or the Slovakian one for that matter. However, I do know that Slovenia borders Italy and Croatia (and maybe Austria... I think?) and that it's capital's name is spelled "Ljubljana," except that the Js probably make a Y sound instead of a DZH sound, like they do in English. Also, Slovakia is the eastern half of the former nation Czechoslovakia, which itself was the northern half of the former empire Austria-Hungary. (I don't know the capital of Slovakia off the top of my head, but I'm sure I'd remember if someone reminded me.)

Geography is another one of my strong points, after language.

Our neighbours are Italy, Croatia, Hungary and Austria. Slovakia's capital is Bratislava and some would mix that with Bucharest that is Romania's.
