616 is found in some early texts. One of the Betty Papyri (P47) from the 3rd century is the earliest known copy of Revelation and has 616 rather than 666.

The 2nd century Church Father Irenaeus mentions this variation in some texts in the late second century and thinks they were from a corrupted version.

One explanation is that the name of Caesar Nero in Hebrew is qsr nrwn (Kaiser Neron) -- when you add up the numerical values of the Hebrew letters you get 666.

But when the Latin version of Nero is used -- qsr nrw (Kaiser Nero) -- the missing "n" causes the number to add up to 616.

This theory is favored among those who think that Revelation is a prophecy about things that must "shortly take place" (in the first century and that John was writing in exile under the persecution of Christians during a three-and-half year long period of persection from about 63 to 67 A.D.

The rest of the book is then about the war on Jerusalem by Rome begun by Nero and finished in A.D. 70 by the Roman Emperor Vespasian.

Many scholars are of the opionion that the beast of Revelation was Nero and John used a code name "The Beast = 666" to alert the churches of Asia Minor to thinks that "must shortly take place."
