I think I am the exception to this rule. Never, in my entire life, have I ever wanted to skateboard, wear nothing but black outside of a funeral, nor do I believe I have gone through angst. . . I did once paint my fingernails black, but that was just because I found black nail polish (did not know they had made that color of polish), and black is my favorite color because it brings all other colors together (sappy, yes, I know, but very true).

At Sketch: Be careful with those skateboards. I hear that they're out for vengeance this year. I stick to roller blades (but even those are against me).

Never wanted to ride a skateboard, and I don't really ever do anything "angsty." Though the black rule completely applies to me, my wardrobe looks like the KKK's worst nightmare  Light colors stand out to much IMO. I like to blend in, move between circles instead of being the center of the circle. Flawed logic, but my logic.

Uhm, I'm actually fairly tan. You get that from hard work in the sun. And firm calves, you get those too.

Buy a fixed gear, ride daily, bomb some hills, and watch them balloon.

Sitting on a skateboard and riding it down a hill is fun.

Fixed gears are retarded and dangerous. I'm all for going out and hurting yourself, but when you take brake off a bike and go around San Francisco you put others at risk. Fuck that shit.

I thought the whole point of fixed gears is that they have no brakes. Because that is what everyone does around here. No joke. San Francisco is full of people who have fixed gears and no breaks. Fucking stupid.

Fixed gear means that you can't shift between gears.

It means the bike can't coast dude. So when you go down a hill, your legs have to move the speed of the bike. And a lot of people with fixies like to take off the brakes. Therefore making them retard machines.

But your statements gave me the impression that you thought they specifically did not have brakes by definition.

Around here that is the case. No one puts brakes on a fixed gear. I mean absolutely none of them.

I consider myself a bicyclist first, hipster second.

When I go down a hill really fast, I can reach scary speeds for my legs (~160-180RPM) but I always know if there's any real danger I can use my front brake which operates 75% of my stopping power. What stinks about going brakeless on fixed gear (besides your chain falling off or some other drivetrain malfunction) is that you don't come to an immediate stop, you just skid into whatever car/animal/person you're headed toward at top speed. That is, of course, IF you have the legpower to stop yourself, which many fixed gear newbies do *not.*

It's a fad there. The benefits of going brakeless¿ You're forced to be more aware, you're able to do bar spins (if you dont have drop handlebars like I do,) and you're able to rest assured that you're putting yourself at risk when you reach high speeds. It's a bit of a rush, I will admit. But I'm never going brakeless.

Track bicycles have no brakes, but they belong on the track. When you're in the city¿ Consider the fact that someone invented brakes JUST so you could stop yourself. People are so stupid.

Amen.

@Glock- And bikes are treated like cars. Drinking and riding a bike can get you a DUI. So how would those hipsters feel if I went down their hills with no brakes on my Honda?

Well, its like going down with a honda with brakes that only sort of work, and could fail with no backup system.

I drink and bike all the time. It's way easier than you think. (Like riding a bike.)
