"A disc that can store 500 gigabytes (GB) of data, equivalent to 100 DVDs, has been unveiled by General Electric.

The micro-holographic disc, which is the same size as existing DVD discs, is aimed at the archive industry.

But the company believes it can eventually be used in the consumer market place and home players.

Blu-ray discs, which are used to store high definition movies and games, can currently hold between 25GB and 50GB. "

No word on the potential cost to make or buy it. But 500GB...that's just insane. My 120GB Zune is even put to shame.

Then again, software > storage

This is getting ridiculous, a 500gb disk? I can imagine it's usefulness within a company that needs to store information but in a regular home?

Software and games already take up a ridiculous amount of storage space, I fear the day when windows will be installed from a 500gb dvd.

Software has just gotten more resource hungry and not that much more productive.

Anyway, the disk is still an accomplishment :)

If I could put 100 DVDs on it, and then still play it in a DVD player, that would be AWESHUM.

You could, but then again a 500gb dvd will only come with one mega high quality ultra high definition uselessly high resolution movie.

You'd need a ridiculously high definition tv before it mattered, too.

Aye you would, but even if people didn't have one they would still buy the dvd and pretend that they actually notice the extra quality.

I think it would be nice to have a series of movies, that would normally take up several discs, only take up one or two at the max. Think about having Aliens on one disc!

Or every episode of DBZ or The Office or many other TV shows, and if not on one then on two discs [i.e. The Simpsons].

Az, you and I both know it's just more convenient to have two or three discs of your favorite shows rather then a portable HDD. Besides, a normal 50 set of DVDs will be how many 1 TB HDD? 25 TBs (DVDs) would be about as much weight as a 1TB (HDD).
