laptop sound card

I was hooking up speakers to my laptop, and I accidentally sent power back up to the headphone jack. Now it can't tell there is even anything plugged in. Can this be fixed...? I don't think it can, but one can never gain insight by staying silent...

I'm looking at gaming laptops/desktop replacements. How does the sound card in the Toshiba Satellite P100 ST9612 compare to the onboard Sound Blaster Audigy in the Dell XPS 1710? Will there be noticable difference when gaming or watching DVDs?
Can a cheap sound card slow down gaming performance? I see a lot of gaming laptops with ''sound blaster compatible'' sound cards.
Are these cards any good?
