I killed my laptop.

Postby Voly » Tue Jul 21, 2009 7:06 pm

I ran CCleaner and it deleted some system files, and now my laptop won't run. Needless to say I'm never using CCleaner again, but I don't have the Vista CD, nor do I have any files backed up [noob i know] and I'm downloading an iso of the vista recovery disc right now.

I don't even know if it's going to help, so does anyone have any other suggestions?

what the?

HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO KILL IT WITH CCLEANER? i've NEVER been able to do that.

anyway, if the recovery disc won't work, i'd advice on doing a fresh install after backing up your files.
you need either a dvd player and a spare harddrive or a dvd player AND a second one that can burn.

ubuntu is easy as live distro if you've no experience, or knoppix.

if you don't have that, use hiren's bootcd to resize the partition with your files on it to as small as you can (i'm partial to the acronis disk manager on that bootdisc), and install a seperate OS on the new space.
then boot that disc and back up your files.

after that do a fresh install of vista.
h33t has one, their torrents usually download fairly quickly

do NOT download a "black edition" or stuff like that, you don't want an OS in which some random dude has cut bits.

oh, and since this is a laptop, most manufacuters ship a disc along, even if it's not labeled as windows recovery, DO check what discs you have.
it being a laptop could give trouble too, btw, since you may be unable to get certain drivers on the manufacturer's site.

It came with Vista preinstalled on the HDD, and there are no discs in the box, which I left everything in.

I'm using this computer to burn the recovery disc to run on my laptop in safe mode [which still works]. If that doesn't work, then I'll download that h33t torrent and see how that goes, but I'm hoping the recovery disc will work.

...CCleaner killed your computer? I'm already ignoring this post.

*Shrug* I have no idea how it happened. I had done nothing with my computer all day, I downloaded CCleaner from Filehippo, which is where the CCleaner website leads to download it. I installed it, ran it, and then my computer told me that it was trying to kill me so it did an emergency shutdown.

I know it sounds unbelievable but it honestly could not have been anything else. There was nothing else.

The only thing I can think it did was delete a needed registry...but that seems a little unlikely.

That could have been it. I'm not good with computers, I just know that they rarely break themselves and I hadn't done anything but run CCleaner for like... 3-4 hours prior. It had been closed that whole time, and I opened it and went to install ccleaner and... well you know the rest.

Well it's really hard for me to say that though, because I have all of the registry clicked to delete if unneeded.

I downloaded it, changed no settings. I ran it, and my computer told me it was fucked and then shut down.

It got halfway done and nothing else was running. There's nothing it could have been unless it impulsively decided to delete shit off itself.

ccleaner can't do this. especially if you didn't run the registry bit which is on a second tab.

To free up valuable hard disk space.

It's called delete movies games and music that go unused. What were you hoping for, 6 gigs of unused registry files¿

He didn't change the settings, I don't think the unused registry is selected.

The best thing would've been just to delete the unused system restores. Those things are GB killers.

I do this pretty much weekly.

Unused system restores is pretty smart, though.
