The easiest way to describe Winamp is that it's a Linux version of Windows Media Player.

Like GC, I also use the standard media player that my MP3 player uses, which is iTunes.

dear lord...

anyway, winamp is a music player for windows.
it's impractical because for whatever goal you would use it, there's a better alternative.
care about size? foobar
care about memory/cpu footprint? foobar
care about library? j river media center, mediamonkey, or customized foobar
care about looks? customized foobar, j river media center, media monkey, or random other.
care about multi-window? customized foobar, or something like aimp2.
care about customizability? customized foobar, mediamonkey, or j river media center.
care about video capability? vlc, GOM player, BS player, or any available alternatives.
care about ease of use? ANY of the above.

iTunes does everything I care about with ease.

and is an absolute hog, causes shut-in, installs junk you don't want, and DOESN'T SUPPORT FLAC!

I got rid of all the junk I didn't want, and I don't use my computer for much, so it being an absolute hog is fine. I don't even know what shut-in is, so that's no problem. Also, my computer's speakers suck so bad that having FLAC format isn't at all important.

Do you mean like a stereo, or better speakers, or something? The only time I ever hear amp is either the power amplifier between the head unit and the speakers in a car, or the kind you plug a guitar into, neither of which help the music on my computer.

err, you don't do the cd player/tv/radio > amplifier > speakers thing? almost always better than an all in one.
though we don't have the tv hooked to ours, speakers are in the wrong spot for it to sound right.

If it does everything he asks for, isn't that morally permissible¿

I'll try your top two/three favourite media players

Mediamonkey and foobar, good guesses¿ Not willing to program.

provided you want a whole library and similar functions:
not willing to spend a couple of hours or crack, mediamonkey.
if you are willing to crack, j river media center, though it might hog a bit depending on settings, and may need a little customizing.

if you just want playing:
stock foobar or VLC.

j river media center.
it's a trial unless you buy/crack.
mediamonkey has a paid version too, but the paid ver adds little enough that you can just use the free one.
gimme a shout if you want a crack mailed for either.

After you said that, I went back and read it, and thought he said "I'll mail you some crack".
