IPv4 IP Addresses Ran Out

Postby Palmer » Fri Feb 18, 2011 4:31 am

I'm a little late on posting this, but on January 31st, 2011, the free pool of IPv4 (IP address version 4) addresses ran out.

Apparently a lot of people don't understand that there are "different kinds" of IP addresses, so:
IPv4 is what people used, but an IP is limited to so many combinations before there is no combinations of numbers left.
IPv6 is just IP version 6. To keep things on a simpler level, more IPs can connect since all of the combinations of IP addresses on IPv4 are in use.
(Just to help explain for those that don't know)

Good thing we've been preparing for this- could have been like a Y2K epidemic. :D

Well, the switch still has to be made, so let's see what happens. Apparently on June 8th is going to be IPv6 day, featuring a global 24 hour test of the new protocol.

Well, we won't have too many more. The world ends next year.
