Stage One...

Postby ƒrosty » Wed Mar 12, 2008 1:21 am

...Of the eventual robotic revolt.

I read it in a magazine first, but they're a hop, skip, and a jump away from giving it a memory which causes it to steer towards the nicer people and away from things that have caused it trauma. It can hear, see, feel, and learn language. It knows if you've picked it up or if it's upside down or if you've pulled it's leg a little too hard and shit like that.

In the end, we've created a robot that can differentiate between good and bad, and learn based on experience. Eventually, they might recognize human nature as bad in some way and eliminate or enslave us for our own good.

First this, next will be robotic law enforcement... All that shit. They're already planning on making robotic soccer players.

Ever since the iPhone, man... Technology just shouldn't get this far.

@topic,

Reminds me much like Jurassic Park, and how most of the dinosaurs they used were just robots. Oddly, I can surely say, that I will purchase one of them later in life. I'm not a big fan on robotics because I firmly believe that it will be in fact our undoing, but at a chance to have a pet dinosaur that can change and become human-like...it's something that I can't describe.
For all we know humans are just weapons created by the world.

"Ive seen things you people wouldnt believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. Ive watched sea beams glitter in the dark 10 hours a day. All these...moments will be lost in time. Like tears in rain."

Or something similar to that ^^

@Frosty

The robot avoids things it doesn't like. It doesn't try to change them. Robots are always programmed to be passive.

Robots are just computers that can react physically to the environment. They are hardly any more dangerous than real computers themselves, especially since they will never be as physically competent as a human body.

Also, computers will not try to take over or destroy mankind by themselves. Rather, a human being will use them to do so.

That's why it's stage one, man. That thing ain't gonna kill us, but the offspring of it will somehow.

Technology isn't going to kill us.

Aliens will first.

Pfft. The surest sign that there is alien life is that none of it has tried to contact us.
If I was extraterrestrial, there's no way in the nine blue hells I'd try to make contact with humans.

I worry more about the people using technology, not the technology itself. Ever heard of the Pain Ray?

I've basically resigned to the fact that much technology will be used like that.
It actively turning on us is what we can prevent.

@Frosty

Robots and computers will not dominate us; they will be used to dominate us. They are the gun, not the shooter.

I know that's infinitely more likely. I'm just uncomfortable with A.I.

SPEAKING OF SCARY TECHNOLOGY!
Boeing made a laserbeam firing plane that melts tanks and shit!

At the end of the modification effort, the aircraft will be ready for installation and testing of a sophisticated high-energy chemical laser system capable of shooting down Scud-like missiles at the speed of light from hundreds of miles away. The ABL is to be the world's first laser-armed aircraft of the new millennium and a critical component of the Department of Defense's theater missile defense strategy.

A robot, remotely controlled by a computer.

If a person is hypnotized and kills someone, the person hypnotized is considered a murder. I would think the same logic applies to this, specially if the robot had set commands to search for a specific person. We'll just have to wait for the first robot to kill to see what the courts say.

Governments order the deaths of thousands, and get away with it. I don't see how much of a difference it makes, whether it's people or robots who do this.

Because that technology has the capacity to destroy the governments as well.

Wouldn't be hard to mount an autonomous turret on it.

Not hard at all.
