The Culture of the Place You Live In

Postby Davion Fuxa » Fri Sep 25, 2009 3:44 pm

A question I pose to you all: What makes your culture what it is? What are the tenants, or pillars of your country, state, or town? Why is your culture what it is?

I suppose I wonder a bit about this because it seems my government is doing everything out of sync of what should really be done. I also wonder as well if Canadians are completely abandoning their culture, and adopt that of Americans more and more. Though at the same time I wonder exactly what it is. Canada has always been different then say the United States, but at the same time, it is hard to identify what it is.

I hold nothing against the American culture, but at the same time I am not a great fan of Canada adopting American customs or ideas that contrast to what Canada is.

Looking at culture on a smaller level seems rather difficult too, as signs of it may be there, but they aren't broadcast in the slightest.

How does Culture relate to you as well? For me, I find myself running perpendicular in some ways, parallel in others.

Cultural rules of my town:

• The taller your pickup or SUV is, the cooler you are.
• It's even better if you cut out the pipes.
• It's even better still if it's covered in an inch of mud from tires to roof.
• Diesel engines are the coolest. Especially when you dump black smoke on people who are unlucky enough to be behind you at a stoplight.
• Mossy Oak and John Deere.
• Shitty cheap ass beer in a run down leaky broken trailer with no women present is what parties should (and usually do) consist of.
• Talking bad about everyone makes everyone want to be your friend.
• If you're gay, people hate you.

I hate where I live.

I live in the "Bible-Belt." It's complete irony. :?

The culture of my town:
-If you go to church, you're a good kid.
-Telling a lie is ok, as long as it's for "The Lord."
-Drug use is ok, just pray before you do.
-Party all night and keep it shushed the next day.
-If you're a "devil" (Greeneville High School Student), you are thought highly of.
-If you are a "devil," all other neighboring schools hate you.
-If you are a unique "devil," then other "devils" hate you too.

North Dakota culture:

1. SMILE. GOD HELP YOU IF YOU DO NOT SMILE.

2. Talk in an annoying Sarah Palin accent.

3. Drive a grey minivan identical to every other minivan on the block, live in a big white house identical to every other house on the block, and have two kids named Mike and Destiny, who are identical to every other kid on the block.

4. Pretend drugs, crime, and black people don't exist.

nassau county, new york:
1. jews. are. everywhere.
2. if you wear abercrombie, you must be cool.
3. if you have color, you must've grown up in the hood, so you must do drugs and/or be a hooker.
4. there's your ghetto/black/spanish clique, your preppy/ditsy/white clique, and the asian/nice/*peace sign cuteness* clique. everyone else is shunned, even by other misfits.
5. the rare indian kid with glasses must be smart and so must be pushed around and teased.
6. you'll never see black people and jewish people in the same neighborhood. soon as one moves in, the other moves out.

yay, new york.

My hometowns culture:
1. fear what you don't understand, then embrace it, so as to create fear in everyone else.
2. Your child will either turn out emo or academic, unless they're brown, in which case they do what their parents did, for better or worse.
3. If your child turns emo, they will do the same things in the same places every day, and as such, everyone will learn their patterns and how to avoid them.
4. If you wake up in 20 years in the exact same position of failure as you started, you've done well.

My new towns culture:
1. live in the bubble of Wellington art and culture and don't acknowledge other forms of western culture unless you're a hipster or foreign.
2. If you listen to chart music and watch lots of tv, people will stare at you as if you're from another planet.
3. Learn to understand and accept everyone for who they are. Otherwise you will be called a bigot and no one will want to talk to you.
4. If you don't drink/make/know stuff about various types of coffee, people will assume you're either mormon or have a medical condition.
5. If you didn't attend University, you probably work in customer service.
6. If you don't have a favourite type of beer, coffee, or wine, and you don't identify with particular types of film/music, whatever types that may be, then you are not cultured. It helps if you dress very intentionally too.

This cross section of various cultures with representatives attending the Mindistortion forums gives me the impression that civilization is mentally sick.

My country, in general.

-everyone in every house have a different skin colour.
-everyone except for muslims complain about the special privillages(Did I spell it right?) that only the malays have.
-If you marry a muslim, you must convert into Islam as well.
-The politics here hate America.
-There's no such thing as 'you have no religion'.
-Books and food cost a hell lot.
-The medical service isn't great, but I like the old nurses.
-Most people pronounce dolphin as 'door-pin'(In other words, not very good in english...)

Seeing as how most MDers are underage without a job or clue, I think its biased in a highly negative way.

My list of MDers worth a fuck:
Glock
Anarch
Frosty
Hery

But its not like I really KNOW any of these people or others on this forum, so obviously my opinion is just as biased.

I have to have a job or a clue to know how people act in my rural Missouri town? News to me.

And I'm 18, same as Anarch and Frosty.

Boo hoo, we didn't get mentioned, but don't worry Wayne, he's just biased.

And hurrah for Burned for posting about a place with a sort of less negative outlook.

I was thinking this too. I'd also add Astica to the list.

And what ever happened to Hellbilly and Ardizt? And why does Syn keep leaving?

Esch hasn't seemed to like wayne at all most of the time, and he already said recently he doesn't even know Astica.

I lurv Wayne, just that he doesn't do much with his life for me to deem him "worth a fuck".

As for Frosty and Anarch, I get them confused with each other and generally put one and the other together for fairness.

And I don't really care for Astica to be honest. I dislike more posts of hers than like.

Oh, I didn't mean to sound negative about my new town. It can be a bit harsh, sure, but so can everywhere. I actually really like it here. Definitely a negative outlook about my first town though.

You can't explain your culture in a paragraph or two on a webforum. It's all in the tiny details.

Where I come from, it's rude to raise your middle finger at someone in anger.
Where I come from, it's proper etiquette to give your seat up if a lady is standing without one (though I myself seem a little more proper than my college-age counterparts. My friends make fun sometimes.)
Where I come from, cigarette smoking is as big and a part of our culture as music. It's unfortunate but that's the case.
Where I come from, it's okay to talk about the weather when you have nothing to talk about.

and other.
