Old Metal>New Metal.

Postby Frank Sino. » Tue Oct 28, 2008 11:47 pm

Does anyone agree with me on this?

I find that heavy metal these days just has no depth to it. The only new metal that I like are those that are in the style of early metal.

Does anybody have suggestions for which bands I should listen to that might change my mind?

i used to think that, and still do, to a degree.
i think it's as much a matter of taste and only remembering the better stuff of the past as it is a change in quality, though.

what sort of style are you looking for?
nwobhm?
early trash?

I like a lot of early thrash and death metal. Some of the bands I like are Anthrax, Slayer, Death, some Gorguts, Evile, some Metallica, Morbid Angel and Cannibal Corpse pre-George Fisher.

What about Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and all them?

Nu-Metal has become a curse word in a lot of ears. There's some good metal these days, but it's diamonds in shit, as opposed to the transcendent glory which made older metal(even going back to rock; Bowie, anyone?) easy to see.

Old Rock is definitely a lot better than new rock, but Metal made somewhat recently (I dont want to say new metal) can still be quite good too.

The thing with old metal is that we only hear the classic good old metal thats lasted forever. Im sure there were plenty of other shit metal bands around at the same time as Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden we just dont hear about too.

PS: I dont really like Bruce Dickinson...

I dont care how old the music is, as long as it sounds good. I never really liked Iron Maiden or Metallica, I want something harder

i HAVE to stress checking both sabbath and maiden, i've 4 shirts which i randomly wear, 3 are maiden band-shirts.
ast is right tho, while bruce definately has the better voice, it's not the most appealing one, paul's was much nicer, it was really raw.

another band you might want to listen to is megadeth, and then there's pantera of course, and possibly motorhead if you want some more classic-rock type stuff.
i'd also recommend annihilator, black label society, and possibly caliban or devildriver, or white zombie.

 My god, even I've got a Black Sabbath CD, and I'm not even a metal fan!

i've got a black sabbath LP, love the thing.
unfortunately, my needle's busted, and it costs more than a 100 bucks to replace it with a same-quality one.

wayne, no hatebreed?

Depends on what mood I'm in.
Is there a promised land
Or am I on the journey going to nowhere?
Are the streets paved with gold
Or am I slipping on the mold that slowly grows there?

Hatebreed is classified as Hardcore, though, isn't it? That's how I've always seen it used. The three classic examples of modern Hardcore are Hatebreed, Terror, and Madball.

*shrug* I don't really like Hatebreed, though, personally.

XD right wayne.
i find it easier to channel hatebreed, and while townsend's stuff is better to listen to, it's also HARDER to listen to properly.
thus, when i've the energy/attention/leisure i listen to SYL, and for day-to-day stuff i prefer hatebreed.

i still think syl is better than what he's doing now, btw, from what i heard.

vb,
true, but i mentioned white zombie, for example, that's farther removed from your more regulair metal, just like machine head won't fit the classic metal bill.

Behemoth makes me violent. Stabbing Westward was good though they are not metal. It's a shame how their vocalist went to some emopunkfagband after SW broke up

what he's doing now? are you referring to last year's "ziltoid the omnniscient" album? i don't understand the hate for that album, i can't help feel people completely missed the point.

well i wouldn't compare SYL to his solo stuff, they're two completely different projects, and ziltoid is mostly just a joke concept album so i wouldn't compare it to the rest of his albums in any case.

I was going to make an argument, but fuck it. I'm too tired.

Apples and oranges. That's it. All I've got to say.

apples and oranges, both fruit.

yes, if you go into the most intrinistic detail, it's not viable to compare, but on a broader scheme, why not?
