I definitely agree, it's about self-awareness, self-confidence and self-respect. Of course, everything has it's limits and if selfish is all you are, then you're just a dick.

I don't see what part of what he said was prodigious. It's an obvious pattern in human behavior. If someone can think, chances are, they know they're selfish. Admitting it is different.

I don't even know what a prodigy is, except a really cool band that made "The fat of the land" one of my all time favorites.

Eh, I think prodigy is better known for "Firestarter".

...though Frosty does have a point in most cases, nearly all, there are cases where things are done for another. It would be impossible fo meto tell one of these moments, because I don't know the intentions behind why the person did it, but there is a capacity for caring in the human psyche...although an under-used part, it still can influence people to do self-less acts.

That's automatic or instinctual. The essence of human motivation is only the self.

@Definition of prodigy: It's a young person who is very smart for their age.

@Frosty- there can, in fact, be motivation to do something for another. Anonymous charity donations, for example. There is no physical or status gain. Unless you call feeling good about one's life a selfish act, then there are motivations other than self-gratification and improvement.

Unless you call feeling good about one's life a selfish act

that is exactly what he means
ultimately, you do something for yourself, you don't donate because someone is helped, you donate because you WANT or THINK that other should be helped, which has a positive effect on how you feel, or stops a negative one.

Just to let you know, this isn't an exclusive human trait. In fact, it's a universal trait in all animals. Even altruism has it's roots in the "selfish" needs of a single organism.

And it goes much more deeper than that.

Or am I slipping on the mold that slowly grows there?

I could've said organism but I didn't want to sound more like a twat.

I wasn't really viewing that as a selfish motivator, but if you do, then, in your perspective, things are, in fact, always for greed and self-enhancement. But, I view feeling good as a reward not necessarily expected. So let's agree to differ.

it's not as much different viewpoints, i think, as different colourations of the same image.
it's where you put the accent.

doing everything for yourself like this isn't bad, it doesn't have the load it does in how it's normally meant.
nor does it mean you shouldn't be grateful for what others do, it's just that they do it because THEY decide to, because they feel like they have/want to, it doesn't change what one does.
