Hey, what's up?

Postby Ave » Tue Dec 07, 2010 9:58 pm

The name is picked up from Latin, meaning "Hail". A nickname I've had for a few years now. Not 100% sure how I got it, however first things first.

I'm a student from the east of England. Hoping to achieve a medical career sometime in the future.
In my spare time I skateboard and write music.
I consider myself to be a very open-minded person. I strongly look down on racism and any other form of discrimination. I'm your all-round peace keeper.

I love to play guitar and read.
This time last year, my life was a wreck. I was into drugs and betrayed everyone I knew.
Although thanks to my amazing friends, my life is back on track and I'm hoping for a good future.

I'm an animal rights enthusiast and I am against any form of war or violence.

There's much more I could say about myself, only a brief introduction is always a good introduction.

:D

Continue. You are better than anyone we've had recently, and I, personally, have no complaint yet.

So welcome, Hail.

I like you. If you leave like the rest of them, I'll skin you alive.

In other words, stick around.

You are not about to die.

Nor are you a gladiator, unless you change your name to russel crowe.

I so want to learn Latin. I'll be taking online classes if Fairmont State doesn't offer.

We learned Latin at my primary school, although for me it really went in one ear and out the other. That's where "Ave" originates from somehow. An old school joke, or something.

The only language you could learn in my High School was Spanish. Because of all the beaners.

We didn't have a language choice in elementary..

Middle School: Spanish

High School: Chinese, Spanish, French, German (only for my first year was that available, though)

But, of course, no Latin :(

French German and spanish are all latin based, so you kind of have learnt them.

german, latin based? since when?
german, english, dutch, all germanic languages, probably descended from what we call proto-germanic.

french/spanish share a root, of course.

English does as well, to a point. German shares characteristics, but proto-german and Latin probably existed around the same time, so that comes as no surprise.

According to that, English is a Germanic language, despite its overwhelmingly numerous cognates with latin languages. Unless that's a chart of sentence structures, as English sentence structure is more similar to German than the Latin languages.

But either way, German is not Latin, it's Germanic, which should be obvious just given the name.

So when rome invaded most of europe, they had absolutely no effect on the language?

They did. They had influences, but the root was still Germanic. Personally, though, I'd say English has evolved to a point about 50/50 Latin/Germanic.

I think you're not even remotely aware of how closely related German and English are. Latin had its fair share of influence, but 50/50 is rather far fetched.
