Silent Films

Postby sombra_cristalina » Wed Jan 24, 2007 9:57 pm

I've recently had an interst in old silent movies, especially the old horror films. Has anyboy else watched any, and what do you guys think of them?

I used to want to make a silent film, but gad, is it hard to convey information in those things or what.

I found a website a few years back that had a lot. I also found some at the library.

I once saw Murnau's Nosferatu from 1922. There are sites where you can get it legally for free since it's copyright is expired already.

I didn't make it through the whole movie though. It's one of the strangest, weirdest pieces of film I've ever laid my eyes upon.

Yeah, you can download Nosferatu on Youtube.

The shortest silent film I've seen so far is Tom Edison's Frankenstein from 1910. You can watch it here, it's 15 minutes at the most:

"Of Mice and Menace" by Manuel Fallmann is shorter.

That's not a "film".
Is there a promised land
Or am I on the journey going to nowhere?
Are the streets paved with gold
Or am I slipping on the mold that slowly grows there?

*resurrect*

I saw a Buster Keaton movie tonight. One from 1927 called the "The General".

And I gotta say it's a really great movie. I have lots of respect for him being able to tell a interesting, funny story with barely no dialog at all (except for the occasional text screens). And using humor that works without words is something that enables it to work across language barriers and cultural differences. Also, many classical slapstick silent movies are way funnier and profounder than many of the "comedic" abominations we find today.
